U8As and U8Bs v Cargilfield
Wednesday 28th September, 2016
St Mary’s 0 – Cargilfield 4
Congratulations to Cargilfield on winning this match which, despite the score, was a very close match where both teams were contesting for the ball throughout. It was a blustery, humid day and the girls felt the heat as they played their first match against another school. St. Mary’s had the first pushback and Celia got the game started with a nice pass to Tallulah. Tallulah’s attempt to pass the ball on to Mahi was quickly smothered however as the Cargilfield girls were on the ball like a magnet from the start. Tanya and Beattie, our defence duo, were ready with sticks down to keep the ball out of the goal. They worked very hard throughout the match to defend the goal. The ball was surrounded on all sides and I was delighted to see our girls trying hard to put their training into practice and to remain in their positions so they could pass the ball on once it was won. However they had to constantly tackle all 5 Cargilfield players to get that chance. The first goal trickled over the line after a prolonged tackling session in front of our goal. Following the goal St. Mary’s girls were able to push forward and run behind the Cargilfield players and try for goal, though this unfortunately went wide and was swiftly followed by the half time whistle.
In the second half St. Mary’s conceded 3 more goals after hard tackling sessions in our half. Whenever our girls managed to win the ball and move it towards the opposing goal they were threatening to the opposition and found themselves with some room to start passing and went for goal. Unfortunately each attempt went wide so Cargilfield were back in possession. All 5 girls ran their socks off and dug deep to do their best in their very first match against another school. Celia, Tallulah and Mahi were winning the ball from tackles and attempting to make passes and get the ball moved towards the opposition’s goal. Tanya and Beattie were determined and persistent in their defence of our goal and managed to win and pass the ball onto their teammates.
A fantastic effort girls and I am sure you will have a better score next time – just keep practising!
U8A Hockey v Cargilfield
28 September 2016
The U8 hockey team met a stronger and more experienced team for their first outing. The match was 5 aside and Cargilfield quickly went on the attack putting the defence under constant pressure. The majority of the play was in our defensive half and Cargilfield managed to put a number of goals past the defence however the girls continued to fight back and remained positive throughout.
Although Cargilfield continued to dominate play in the second half and scored again, St Mary’s, when gaining a break in play, moved the ball forward and scored a goal.
It may not have been the start to the season that we would have hoped for, but the U8 team of: Ally, Bee, Charlotte, Freya, Florence and Zara were upbeat and determined throughout and are looking positively towards their next fixture.
