2nd Hockey v Cargilfield 28 Se

One sentence sums up the 2nds match today; the best hockey the girls have played this season so far! What a great match the mighty 2nds had this afternoon and they should be rightfully proud of their performance, as is their coach!

Today the whole squad of 10 demonstrated the skills and set pieces they have been relentlessly practising in training and their hard work paid off. There were some fantastic drop passes, taking of free hits quickly, protecting the ball carefully, skilfully going round opposition players rather than through them and remembering correct formations when defending. Nearly every box was ticked and the 9 red faces of the outfield players was a clear indication of how hard they were working. At half time St. Mary’s were 2-0 up after a cracking goal from Eloise crossing the ball into the D and Louisa slapping it into the goal and then a mismatch of a goal which was not as silky smooth but got the ball over the line nonetheless. Phoebe had a rather quiet first half back in her goal on the far side of the pitch as Iona and Isla cleared nearly every ball that came their way with composure sending it back up the pitch to the midfield.

In the second half, Cargilfield were taking possession away from us a lot more and getting stuck into tackling our advances. However, Lucy, Ruby, Millie and Eloise were staying strong in the midfield and making super square passes to each other and gaining the confidence to go round the Cargilfield players. Freya, Rowan and Louisa all did well up front and were ready on their respective posts for any shots at goal that were going slightly off target. There were many near misses. Remember, heads up before you shoot! A short corner allowed Eloise to get a brilliant straight strike at goal which smashed into the backboard, increasing our lead. Cargilfield didn’t hold back and due to some tired legs on St. Mary’s part, they got an easy goal which caught us unaware. However, in the final few minutes of the game more text book hockey moves were executed by our girls where Millie and Rowan worked together to get the ball past the fierce Cargilfield goalie once again.

A huge well done to the girls today. With your confidence continuing to grow, let’s keep up this momentum and stay focused on our strengths and getting the little things right next week against Dollar.
