2nd VIII Hockey v Kilgraston

Wednesday 21st September
St. Mary’s 3 – Kilgraston 0

2nds v Kilgraston 22 sept 16

It was another successful afternoon of hockey yesterday for the 2nd VIII as they played Kilgraston up in Perthshire. There’s always much excitement when travelling north of the bridge and the team were in fine fettle, despite having lost 3 members of the squad to illness. Yet we were lucky, the Under 11’s had a full complement on board their minibus so the 2nds were able to steal Lara and Hannah F to help them out.

The game was not the most fast paced of matches but within the first 5 minutes St. Mary’s were awarded a goal, which only just trickled over the line having been tapped around the D and ended up being kicked into the goal by an unlucky defender. It was time for the girls to pick up their work rate and show off the skills they have been improving on so much in training.

The rest of the first half brought many opportunities for both teams but no more goals were scored before the 20 minutes were up. However, being only 1-0 up at half time was not a terribly advantageous position to be in and so the girls were set to prove what they really could do in the second half. They needed to focus on the simple things, staying in position, dropping the ball when play couldn’t go forward and communication.

The girls certainly upped their game and scored two more fantastic goals by following the simple rules of hockey. Both goals were set up by some excellent passing, initialised by great communication between players and then followed through by the forwards being on their posts ready to ensure the ball went over the goal line. The midfields and forwards were clicking well and the defence were supporting nicely and thinking clearly under pressure. Despite the pace of the game still being on the slow side, good decision making was made and some encouraging hockey played.

Let’s be more assertive next week girls and really demonstrate the hockey I’ve seen you play in training! It was a good win this week, but let’s always try and play to our very best.

Next match – Wednesday 28th September v Cargilfield at Tweedbank.
