U11A Rugby v Cliftonhall
Wednesday 21st September 2016
St. Marys travelled to Clifton Hall on Wednesday to play in this 8 a side match. St. Marys opted to take the tap and pass to open the half. The ball on the second pass got out to Thomas E who took it on the burst and he went through a gap to score without a hand being placed on him! A great start and 1-0.
Stunned by this Clifton tried to get themselves into the match. They started to get their hands on the ball themselves now and drove at St. Marys to test their defence. However St. Marys were more than up to the task and tackled well. 4 minutes in and Mac R picked up a loose ball on halfway. He drove low and at pace knocking off tackles on his way to score and make the score now 2-0.
However St. Marys were given a shot across their bows as from a penalty the home team passed out left and outflanked the visitors. The winger ran well to score in the corner and make it 2-1, though St. Marys must organise their defence quicker next time!
St Marys then had a good spell of possession, but turned in too much traffic just as they looked like they had worked hard to create a scoring opportunity. Players must make use of free men around them especially out wide!
However in 8 minutes Mac R drove through into open space and offloaded to the good support from Archie M who was then tackled. From the quick ruck ball Jake M picked up near the line and dived over to score.3-1.
Then came the best move of the match. Mac R picked up on halfway and drove on to the 22. He fed Archie Mac who in turn passed to Caelan B who when being tackled tried to pass out to the free Jake M. A difficult one to take Jake almost did but it was great interplay.
Then in 10 minutes right on halftime Caelan B scored after some good lead up with George B and Frederick K being involved.Halftime.4-1.
Clifton started the half well, and from a penalty after some good possession drove from close in to the line to make it 4-2.
St. Marys lifted their intensity and had a good period of pressure. Ball was moved out to Thomas E who ran over the line but unfortunately dropped it before touching down! Midway through the half Clifton Hall tried to run out from their 22 from a penalty. St. Marys turned over the ball from the ruck and passed out to Caelan B who ran wide to score and make it 5-2.
Play was a little scrappy for the next few minutes as errors crept in from both teams. St. Marys continued to tackle well with Finlay B and Frederick K to the fore but just couldn’t quite finish off some good lead up play. As a result the half and match finished with no further additions to the scoreboard. Final score was 5-2.

Well done to both teams who looked to move ball around on the firm and dry pitch.
