Another great day greeted the St Mary’s and Loretto 1sts squads on front field. St Mary’s kicked off and started the stronger when Lachlan ran in for the first try under the posts after terrific rucking from the forward pack to get quick ball.

Loretto had some dangerous runners and it wasn’t long before they replied with a long range individual effort that came from very poor first up tackling from St Mary’s. St Mary’s were rattled but settled into a rhythm that we know is the St Mary’s style. This style is wide and with flair. The lads began to see space and move the ball. This then enabled Matt to score in the right corner. A great try.

Hamish M, the captain today, then got on the score sheet next when he bundled over under the posts after some great work from Oliver and Jamie in the loose to secure the ball which was bouncing around on the deck. Loretto replied with another good effort through some very weak tackling.

Jamie, who was in the heart of the action all day, got the next try through sheer determination and strong running. Jamie went through about 3 defenders on his way to the line. Hamish got his second within about 2 minutes of the game restarting after some great controlling play by Tommy with some clever kicks and committing defenders to him to free up space on the outside. Loretto got another a few minutes later which came from a poor turnover from a St Mary’s attack.

Next came a little bit of genius from Tommy. After a step and a swerve, he saw some space on the left of the field. He chipped the ball over, Alexander gave a great chase, as did Tommy, the ball bounced, Tommy regathered and was heading for the line only to be dragged down just before. The ball was zipped wide and back before Will got a try under the posts. A brilliant bit of individual play and the team backed it up with great awareness.

Half time came and went and again Jamie got his 2nd dot down. After some super pick and go’s around guard and shield, Jamie found a lot of space and, similar to his first try, went past 4 defenders to score under the posts. A mention must go to William T who’s work rate was outstanding all day. He made try saving tackles again and again. This is the work rate St Mary’s team’s look for and he bailed his team mates out a number of times during the game.

Loretto got another try through some very powerful running but weak defending by St Mary’s again. Lachlan then replied as the game was closing out to put the game out of reach. Hamish M converted to bring up the 50 points. Hamish kicked very well all day and will continue to improve. Unfortunately, Loretto scored at the death to bring the game to a close but what an entertaining game and both teams should be really positive moving onto next week.

Well done boys and we move on to next week with much to work on as always but it was a very good day indeed.

Next Job.
