On one of the first Wednesday's of the Michaelmas term, St. Mary's played Merchiston on a damp and fairly overcast day.

You would be quick to think that a game played in these conditions would be plagued with mistakes. However, I think anyone who watched this masterclass in attacking rugby could certainly see similarities to that of a super 15 game. The game started as it was to go on, with end to end entertainment. Great interlinking play from Alex M and Mitchell C followed by support from Ed S allowed St. Mary's to get on the scoresheet first through Stewart M. This was closely followed by Merchiston, who had some big, strong runners that St. Mary's found a little difficult to tackle. 1 on 1 tackles, on the whole were fairly good, with dogged determination shown from Geordie M leading him to not miss a tackle in the entire match! Defensive structure from both sides seemed a little disorganised allowing the attacking force of both teams to gain momentum. This came in the form of some great running and support from Archie J and

Callum A leading to over half of the teams tries. With the rest of the team following suit, it allowed St. Mary's to keep ahead on the team sheet for the entirety of the game.

For the first game for many of the boys involved, it was a great spectacle to be involved in and it is a great omen for things to come this term. Congratulations boys on a thoroughly deserved win!
