1st VIII Hockey v Gala Academy

Wednesday 14th September

 1st VIII Hockey 14 sept 16

The squad: Lucy (capt.), Jess (GK), Anna, Eloise, Georgia, Chloe, Abbie, Millie, Naesi & Louisa
Gala Academy 0, St. Mary’s 2
Played in much more temperate conditions to last week, today’s game was very evenly contested. Last year we managed to fit this fixture into the calendar for the first time and I was delighted that Gala were keen to host us this time around at Tweedbank.

It was quite apparent from the first whistle that the Gala team were up for the game. Although perhaps not the most skillful individually, what they lacked in skill they certainly made up for in tenacity and speed. Subsequently, time on the ball was brief and the girls found themselves having to move the ball quickly, perhaps too quickly for their liking at times. The first half looked as though it was going to end 0 – 0, until they broke away with the ball and had it not been for some heroics from Jess in goal, they would have taken the lead. As it turned out, Jess saved their shot, the ball went wide, found its way up to their D, whereupon Lucy pounced on the chance to give us the lead.

Upon reflection we probably deserved the lead. The support play on display was very impressive to watch. Millie, Louisa, Eloise and Naesi supported each other superbly down the left wing, whilst on the other wing, Lucy, Georgia, Anna & Chloe also linked very well. Abbie, playing in the middle, had the difficult job of trying to connect both units and did so remarkably well.

The second half saw us change positions a little but the intensity remained high. The Gala girls were as determined as ever and at times I thought we were slightly disjointed, possibly ruffled by the pace of the game. However, defensively we were strong and were able to keep the Gala attacks at bay. Abbie managed to get on the end of a goalmouth scramble and tapped in our second goal of the afternoon which effectively sealed the victory.

So, all in all this was an excellent afternoon and I was thrilled with the result and with some of the hockey I saw on display. It was good to see Anna and Louisa get their first cap for the team, especially when they played so well.
Next week we are away at Kilgraston, with the 2nds and U11s. Well done this week, girls. Now to focus on the next challenge!
