1st hockey v Loretto 7 sept

The squad: Lucy B (capt.), Abbie, Georgia, Chloe, Millie, Naesi, Jess, Eloise & Phoebe

The first game of the season  is always an anxious time, especially after only a couple of training sessions. However, today my anxieties were quickly put to bed as the girls played some fantastic hockey and thoroughly deserved their first win.

Despite being almost too hot for hockey, the girls ran their socks off this afternoon. Their efforts, coupled with some fantastic individual skills, saw them get off to a great start. Lucy was the first to score after a couple of minutes, the result of a superb move down the right wing involving Jess, Naesi and Abbie. Soon after, Naesi scored the second  of the afternoon, an excellent strike from the top of the ‘D’, demonstrating excellent technique and unnerving accuracy. Not to be outdone, Jess then scored a couple which doubled the team’s total, and still with five minutes of the half to go. In the dying minutes of the half, Millie, who had just been put on as center forward, turned up at the far post at just the right time, to tap in her first goal and the team’s fifth of the afternoon. Loretto did manage a goal of their own, so we headed into the half time interval 5 – 1 to the good.

In the second half we experimented with the positions, with the intention of finding links and support play that clicked. The girls did well in their new roles and despite conceding a couple, looked threatening in attack and have given me a few ideas to explore further. Phoebe deserves special mention, playing her first game for the 1sts. She stepped into the role at very short notice, had a crash course of keeping at that level, then proceeded to have a great game, saving many shots and only being beaten from rebounds, something that perhaps our defense could have been quicker to clear.

So all in all, this was a brilliant start to the season and credit to the girls for enduring some hot and sticky conditions.

Next Wednesday we meet Gala Academy at Tweedbank for a 4.00 / 4.15pm start.
