Under 11A Cricket v Belhaven

Venue: St Mary’s
Date: 25 May 2016
Lost by 10 wickets

An overcast day presented itself to both teams on front field on Wednesday. St Mary’s were raring to go after a good result last week. Tommy won the toss and chose to bat this week.

After discovering Belhaven had some very strong and fast bowlers, Tommy and Will made a solid start with a good run rate being hit. Unfortunately Tommy’s wicket was taken for his 8 runs which opened the floodgates for St Mary’s. Batsmen came in and faltered to the power and pace and controlled efficiency of a strong Belhaven side. Catches were caught through leaning back when hitting the shot. The left foot was not moving forward enough from all batsmen and thus there was a lot of ‘fishing’ (just swinging the bat). A special mention must go to Will who again stepped up to the plate and hit 44 runs before getting caught. All but one batsman got a bat and there was improvement among certain players but there will be a lot to work on in the next few weeks. Confidence is a big factor as the team has got ability; it is about believing they can do it.

Eventually, St Mary’s hit 95 runs.

After a hearty tea, Belhaven batsmen came to the crease. A  strong showing from their two openers powered their run rate to 10 runs per over in the first 3 overs.  St Mary’s had to tighten up – fielding was slack and the confidence to catch balls was not there today. Concentration levels were far better though! Some good shots were played by Belhaven but some long shots could have been prevented especially on the boundary.

Some catching opportunities were missed and alas it cost St Mary’s as no wickets were obtained and Belhaven passed the target of 95 runs within 13 overs.
A tough day at the office against a very strong side but the team always learn and will come back stronger next week.

Next job lads,
