1st XI Cricket v Belhaven

Wednesday 25th May

Belhaven won by 8 wickets

Today’s game at Belhaven was always going to be a close encounter, although we’d hoped it was going to be somewhat closer than it was!

Batting first, Harris and George saw off the first over without concern but in the second over, Harris ran himself out trying to take a quick single when it was never there. An over later, George who had played some good looking shots, lofted one to mid-off, rendering us 12 for 2. Lucas and Freddie then got settled and both batted very nicely. They punished some indifferent bowling at times and the score rocketed to 45 from 5 overs. Lucas (16) was run out courtesy of a deflected drive from Freddie hitting the stumps before he could return to his crease. Something you don’t see very often but is no less welcome when it does happen! This triggered a mini collapse. Samuel also ran himself out, albeit from a direct hit, Lachlan was caught but not before scoring what might have been a vital 9 and Harry, Adam, Hamish, Rudi and James, managed to add a few more to what was a pretty meager total. Freddie’s (45) was significant in setting Belhaven 95 to win.

Lucas and George opened the bowling and might easily have taken a wicket or two in the first few overs, but the ball beat the outside edge every time. It wasn’t until to 13th over with the score on 45 that we took the first wicket. A good over from Samuel resulted in an excellent catch at deep mid off by George. George then bowled the following over and took the key wicket of their captain but that was to be the final wicket that fell. Belhaven batted sensibly and reached their target in the 19th over.

So, a disappointing day in the office! A calmer and perhaps more level-headed approach to our batting and some better communication between batsmen, might have made a closer game. Plenty to work on before we host Ardvreck next Wednesday.
