U10B v Cargifield 18th March 1

Seven girls in the U10B netball team travelled to Cargilfield for their last netball match of the season. Cargilfield won the toss and opted to take the first centre pass.

St Mary’s quickly settled into their familiar positions and with tight defence soon gained possession of the ball and their first opportunity to shoot. St Mary’s struggled to get the ball in the net and Cargilfield won a reprieve. The match progressed with very even play. Sumaiyah made numerous interceptions and dispatched the ball easily to either Anna or Amelie who moved intelligently to find the space in the centre third. Eliza used the space to her advantage and with Lucy holding her position in attack, she was able to receive the ball and pass it confidently into the attacking circle giving St Mary’s a number of opportunities to score.

The score was 1-1 at half time and in this closely fought game only 1-2 to Cargilfield after the third quarter. Whatever the final score was going to be it would be close. St Mary’s really defended well and deserved to be in the lead but it looked very much like a win was going to elude them.

Confident and strong play in the centre from Anna, Amelie, and Eliza kept the ball in St Mary’s attacking half in the final quarter and a superb long distance goal from Libby evened the score and succeeded in shaking Cargilfield’s confidence. The final three minutes were intense with Cargilfield frantically attempting to gain the lead again. St Mary’s kept a cool head and with 100% concentration denied their opponents the chance to shoot. Time after time St Mary’s regained possession of the ball but Cargilfield managed to reach their GA who shot and scored, putting them just in the lead again. St Mary’s didn’t deserve to lose the game. They took the next centre pass, Eliza delivering the ball to Amelia who quickly found Hannah (now in the WA position), Hannah passed to Libby in the circle and she held her nerve to score what was to be the final goal. A fabulous hat trick for Libby and final 3-3 score. Well done to all the girls, Hannah F, Libby, Lucy M, Eliza, Anna, Amelie and Sumaiyah.
