1st hockey v Aberlour

Although we hadn’t played hockey since the beginning of December, I was absolutely thrilled with today’s performance. Up against a tall and strong touring Aberlour side, the girls demonstrated how much progress they have made this season with another superb performance.
Right from the outset, we took the game to our visitors. Lucy B. and Stephanie, supported by Molly, Lucy R and Annabel, immediately piled on the pressure which resulted in an early short corner. Cameron injected the ball to the top of the D where it was met by Lucy B, she waited for the runner to arrive whereupon she off-loaded the ball to Stephanie who fired home her shot, which clipped the back board to give us a 1 – 0 lead! All within the first 3 minutes.
Further pressure during the half also paid dividends. Lucy B scored goals 2 & 3 and by the end of the first 20 minutes we had secured a three goal advantage. Although Chloe, Cameron and Flora, hadn’t seen much action during the half, they dealt admirably with what did come their way. Their support play was also very effective, with both Cameron and Chloe venturing up the pitch in support of their mid field. Molly, as ever, worked her socks off and probably covered more ground than most other girls put together; a phenomenal work rate! Lucy R and Annabel were both effective in their wide positions and made some excellent runs down their respective wings. They too supplied some inviting opportunities for Lucy B and Stephanie. All in all, it was an impressive first half.
Legs began to tire in the second half which saw the Aberlour girls come into the game more. Our defense was put under increasing pressure but I was pleased to see the girls stand strong. There were one or two frantic clearances but Cameron, Chloe and Flora kept the visitor’s attacks at bay. Lucy B scored her third and our fourth goal of the afternoon which effectively sealed the victory. However, all credit to the touring girls. They battled hard and never gave up. They were rewarded with a very well taken goal with only a few minutes remaining and started to press for another but time got the better of them. Some heroics from Flora this afternoon, particularly latterly, kept us in the driving seat; she made a number of superb saves!
So, all in all, a great game and a perfect warm up for tomorrow’s tournament at Kilgraston. Well done, girls and I’ll see you at school at 07.20 tomorrow morning! Ouch that’s early!
