U11a Kilgraston March 16

v Heriots   3-0 loss
As seems to be the way with St. Mary’s teams our tournament did not start well; the girls were caught on the back foot and indeed looked as if they were new to the game of hockey! Heriots took full advantage of our sleepy approach and scored 3 goals, the first after only 30 seconds. Unfortunately the ball did not cross our centre line and thus our attackers had no chance to show what they are capable of.  The girls were disappointed and understandably so-however they were keen to make amends and so we agreed to put this loss down to experience.

v Dundee High  1-0 win
A different team emerged for this game! They really took it to the opposition and the tables turned. We were unlucky not to score at least 5 goals; some strikes went wide but others were saved by a competent goalie. Luckily and deservedly for St. Mary’s, Orla’s last strike of the ball hit the backboard just 10 seconds before the hooter sounded-bravo!

v George Watsons  1-1 draw
A very evenly paced match; our defence played as a unit, they communicated and went in for the tackle rather than backing off. Midfielders got the idea of playing off the side of the pitch and used this to their advantage, particularly on the left. Watsons scored first which really fired us up. Orla took the ball back to the centre, looked to me for the re-start and took the chance to self-pass the centre pass-Watsons were onside but not re-formed; they were caught off guard as Orla dodged the lot of them and took the goalie on a 1-1…the goalie came off second best-we had drawn with the mighty Watsons! A super draw against a school with 200 pupils in a year group.

Points were tallied and we had come 2nd in the pool; unfortunately Watsons had scored 1 more goal then St. Mary’s so they progressed to the semi then the final. Heriots beat Watsons 3-0 in  a very exciting final.

So, a lot of positives to be taken from this tournament-we CAN be as good as other teams from MUCH bigger schools but we must be awake and believe in ourselves from the first touch of the ball.

Well done to : Phoebe ,Iona, Maria, Isla, Mhairi, Hannah C, Orla and Jessica.
