1st XV v Earlston High School
Venue: St Mary’s
Date: 9th March 2016
Lost 2 tries to 1.
Wednesday brought a sunny day with no wind and a pitch that hadn’t been played on for a while!
The boys were champing at the bit against a team they knew well. You can’t beat a local derby on your home patch!
After the warm up, Earlston kicked off deep and after an early lack of concentration from St Mary’s, Earlston dived over on the sodden ground to go ahead. St Mary’s had to step up quickly as Earlston looked hungry.
St Mary’s didn’t step up and again watched as Earlston rallied and scored another try 2 minutes later. St Mary’s were rattled but something awoke in the second half. The midfield of Adam, George and Lachlan took a grip of the game and tackled everything that moved!
The chat at half time was to score first in the second half and that we did with Rudi scoring a great team try after building up with some beautiful rugby between backs and forwards.
The pressure was back on Earlston and St Mary’s kept it going for the rest of the match. Unfortunately we could not find the decisive try to bring it to 2 tries all. There were plenty of opportunities and indeed George went over near the end after some great turnovers from the pack but was pulled back for an earlier knock on!
Thomas at blindside had a stormer and was very influential in the pack all day.
St Mary’s 1st XV have come a long way in terms of positive development and with one more game to play this season on Friday, everything will be put into it!
TCUP (Thinking clearly under pressure needs to be used more) and I look forward to seeing the boys showing this on Friday. If this is the case, we will score tries for fun. We are getting to the try line; it is now a case of finishing off!
Next job boys and believe!
