U11A Rugby v Merchison
Wednesday 24th February 2016
On a bright, dry and early spring afternoon the U11’s travelled to Edinburgh to be hosted by Merchiston in their fourth meeting of the season.
St. Mary’s knew it would be a difficult match even though they won the previous 2 meetings against their hosts as Merchiston would be keen to win to square up the” series”.
And so it proved as Merchiston started the brighter of the trio. They had most of the early possession and looked to take it up the middle through their forwards and then put ball wide. St. Mary’s initially held firm, but then Merchiston broke through from the halfway with a determined forward drive to score and lead 1-0.
However St. Mary’s upped effort and intensity and started to have more possession and territory themselves. Good forward driving with Jamie F, Ollie C and Otto K prominent took play into the home ’22. From the ruck ball was moved to Matt b who made space for Caelian B on his outside and from the good pass the latter got in at the corner to score.1-1.
Two minutes later, with play taking place around the halfway, a good William drive took play forward and from the ruck the ball was moved left to Will S on the 10m line. Seeing the gap he accelerated through to well to make it 2-1.
St. Mary’s were now really starting to get on top. With play again around the halfway Mac broke the Merchiston defence line and galloped up field into the home ’22. When tackled he offloaded to Will S who took play forward. From the ruck the ball got to Otto who broke the tackle to score.3-1.
St. Mary’s tails were now up with all the boys wanting their hands on the ball. Alex then ran well and offloaded to Jamie, and when stopped he in turn short passed to Otto on the burst to get over the line to make the halftime score 4-1.
It was important St Mary’s started the half well. However to their credit it was the home side that struck first and reduced the deficit to 4-2.St. Mary’s had to work harder and get their half started. They did. A good determined Thomas E run (now on and making his St Mary’s debut) took play deep into home territory.
St. Mary’s remained there but good home defence kept them at bay. Then from a ruck, after another good drive from Ollie C (who had an excellent game), Otto picked up and went down the blind side and score to make it 5-2.
Soon after Jamie F made it 6-2 after a typical determined run. Alex went off injured which brought Frederick K on again and he quickly got back into action with a strong run supported by William to get play into the home half.
But the home side were not finished as they broke out but Mac, Otto and Will S got back to stop the try initially, but after recycling they drove over to make it 6-3.
There was time for one last St. Mary’s effort and Will S duly obliged after some good driving by our forwards to make the final score 7-3.
Again both teams worked hard in an honest fashion and played with integrity. Then the St. Mary’s boys looked forward to the usual excellent after match Merchiston tea!
