1st VII Netball v Ardvreck

Wednesday 17th February
St. Mary’s 10, Ardvreck 14

Our first home game of the season and we came so close! Ardvreck were late arriving so we reduced today’s game to 4 quarters of 7 minutes in order for the Ardvreck girls to get back up the road in good time. I was thrilled with today’s performance against a very efficient and energetic team.

We got off to the perfect start and dominated the first quarter. Movement was good, passes accurate and Flora and Annabel were both shooting very well indeed. Subsequently, we had secured and confident lead going into the 2nd period.

Again, we played some good netball in the 2nd quarter. The Ardvreck girls started to come into the game but we retained as much possession as they did and scored as many goals. We did start to tire slightly and one or two passes were beginning to get intercepted. However, at half time we were still three goals to the good. Stephanie (GK) and Lucy R (GD) were busy but both defended very well and any unsuccessful shot was quickly snapped up. The more central players of Molly (WD), Lucy B (C) & Cameron (WA) were having to work very hard to keep pace with their opposite numbers. They did very well at upsetting the Ardvreck set plays which won us extra time with the ball in hand.

The third quarter again saw some great netball from both teams. The Ardvreck girls by now had found their form and range and were proving tricky to mark. We started to become careless with possession and gave the ball away all too often. As a consequence, the Ardvreck girls dominated the quarter which ended with the score on 9 – 9.

So the final quarter was to be the decider and the girls gave it their all. Unfortunately we found it tricky to get the ball to Flora and Annabel in the circle and their shooters shot very well. From 10 – 10 our visitors managed to edge their way in front and they secured themselves a narrow victory.

Despite the loss I was thrilled with our performance today. Considering this Ardvreck team have only been beaten once this season and have beaten most of the schools we have played, coming so close today was a credit to the girls.  I hope they take great confidence from their performance in preparation for our game next week at St. Mary’s against Longridge, 2.30pm start.

I would like to extend a special thank you Mr Bell, Mrs Harvey, Matt and Emily who worked tirelessly on Tuesday and Wednesday morning to clear the snow and ice from the netball courts. Without their efforts we would never had been able to play the match today, so thank you all very much. A great team effort!
