Three goals in quick succession from Loretto caught our girls off guard; we appeared sleepy and a little like rabbits in headlights-before we knew it the score was 3-0 and there had only been 5 minutes played! However in true St. Mary’s fashion, after a loud call of ‘waken-up!’ from the coach, the girls did indeed waken up! Quarter time saw us having scored 3 goals to Loretto’s 4.

The second quarter saw the team I know emerge! Play was dynamic and the ball was passed across the court with more speed and accuracy. Centre pass moves worked well with Jessica, Orla and Isla doing exactly what they had been asked to do. The ball was fed to Iona and Rowan who managed to outwit the opposition. We won this quarter 2-0 with the running total now at 5-4 to St. Mary’s.

The girls needed their water at half-time and by jove they deserved a wee rest. Both teams were now desperate for the win and the ball ricocheted up and down the court; Freya and Tegan had their best passages of play and were really getting to grips with marking their opponents. With 2 goals scored by each team the running total was now 7-6 to us.

With all to play for the last quarter of the game was fast and furious; mistakes began to creep in from both sides and panicky passes were made. It is at this point the girls need to learn to slow the game down a little- this will come with practice. Loretto managed to score first in this final quarter , thus equalising the score. However a fantastic long range shot was netted by Rowan and we were in the lead once again. This lead was snatched away from us in the dying seconds of the game when Loretto equalised for the last time. The final score was a very fair 8-8; the game could have gone either way but for two such well-balanced teams it was a match in the true sense of the word.

Well played girls-a great come back but be alert from the whistle next time!

Scorers: Iona S x 6; Rowan x 2
