 U11 Cricket v Ardvreck

Date: 3 June 2015
Won by 2 runs

What a beautiful day it was on front field at St Mary’s to welcome Ardvreck from Perthshire. The wicket was in great nick thanks to Mr Bell and both teams were raring to go.

Murray M won the toss and chose to bat first.

Determination was etched on the faces of Rudi and Murray as they walked in. Alas, some very good bowling by Ardvreck bowled Rudi after a rush of blood to the head – Rudi decided to hit a slog when the bowl was plumb on middle stump. We have to learn! Lachlan came in to the crease and steadied the ship and built some runs with Murray before Murray got bowled in the same fashion! Will S was next in and our run rate needed to be upped! Both Lachlan and Will did well and built a good partnership before Lachlan was bowled for 10 runs after hitting a couple of 4s and 2 singles. Tommy came in and batted well with Will before he too was bowled for 4 runs. Will kept going with Liam and hit some lovely strokes and also hit a beautiful 6 at one point. A brilliant shot! Will eventually got caught at cover and left the field with 25 runs to his name. Liam batted very solidly with Hamish M coming in but then Liam was caught with a good catch after a good knock. Hamish G batted well with some great improvement on his technique. Both Hamish’s wickets were taken with a good catch and bowl before Otto and Wilfie closed the St Mary’s innings strongly with Wilfie particularly impressive with some fantastic shot making through the covers for 4’s and singles. We eventually set a score of 99 to chase.

After tea, Murray opened the bowling with some fantastic pace and accuracy from the town end but Ardvreck’s openers were strong and hit a lot of runs early doors. Will S got the first wicket and the strongest batsman for 25 runs to his name with a fantastic bowl on off stump. Murray bowled the opener on middle stump. Rudi at slip then caught the 3rd batsman from a brilliant bowl from Lachlan F. Rudi was coolness collected when he caught that ball! Ardvreck’s 4th batsman was steady and a number of chances to take his wicket came and went. Ardvreck’s run rate was high and after 13 overs they were on 60 runs and moving well. We had to get some wickets and stop some runs. Murray then got an LBW with a fantastic bowl going to hit leg stump. Alexander F then stepped up and what an over it was collecting two consecutive wickets. Tommy DB’s awareness was crucial and stumped the first wicket and the second was an outstanding catch from Alexander as the ball came straight back at him after a straight bowl. Well done! Tommy looked sharp all day at wicky.
Nerves were beginning to jangle as Lachlan got the next 2 wickets with a catch from Murray and a bowl on middle stump. It was going to be close as the match moved towards the last few overs and Ardvreck were closing on 90. Otto K stepped to the crease and bowled a maiden over then Wilfie B and Hamish both had solid overs but gave a way a few extras which helped Ardvreck. It was down to the last over and Will S came in to bowl his 4th over. Ardvreck needed 6 runs off six bowls to win and 5 to draw. Will bowled as well as you could do in a final over. It took sheer guts and will power – he took the wicket of their 9th batsman with an LBW. The fielding was tense and nervy but the lads kept their calm! Ardvreck then hit a few runs to get to 97 with 2 bowls remaining. Will bowled their 10th batsman on his 5th bowl to win the match by 2 runs!

An outstanding effort from the whole team and a great victory. Hats off to Ardvreck for making it such a great and exciting game of cricket.
Well done lads and remember the learning points.

We can only get better.

Next Job.
