1st XI v Merchiston 1st XI

Wednesday 29th April
Merchiston won by 40 runs
Despite the forecast and the intermittent showers, the gamble of going ahead with today's fixture paid off. Although cold, we dodged the showers and enjoyed an exciting afternoon of cricket.
Winning the toss Lucas decided to put the visitors into bat. In the first couple of overs the Merchiston openers set out their stall; score quickly and amass as large a total as possible was clearly their game plan. George and Jacob opened the bowling and quickly found that anything pitched short was getting punished. George found his line and before long took the first wicket of the day. The 2nd wicket fell a couple of overs later, this time courtesy of a cracking delivery from Jacob. Merchiston then settled in and it wasn’t until Samuel was brought to the bowling attack that we took another wicket, in the 15th over. In fact Samuel took two wickets that over, one a difficult slip catch by Sebastian and the other was caught by Freddie at mid-wicket. I saw an improvement in our fielding from last week which was encouraging and the boys did well to limit Merchiston to 127.
There was time for 5 overs of our innings before tea, so Freddie and Lucas set forth and opened the batting. The two Merchiston openers were quick and accurate. However, both Freddie and Lucas played the opening 5 overs brilliantly, protecting their wickets and getting us off to a confident and encouraging start. At tea we were 24 without loss. After tea, they carried on from where they left off. Both boys played some lovely shots and although Merchiston missed a couple of opportunities, Freddie and Lucas batted superbly and secured an opening partnership of 63. Following a rain stop, Freddie (34) was stumped and Lucas (20) was bowled soon after. George (1), Callum (6) and Samuel (2) all did their best to add to our total, but Merchiston tightened their grip and we ended the afternoon on 87 for 7.
Well done to the boys. Tomorrow we are at Tillside for an evening game, 6pm start and next week we are at Cargilfield for a 2.15pm start on Wednesday.
