1st XIv Fettes

Wednesday 22nd April 2015
St. Mary’s won by 6 wickets

What a fabulous day to get season 2015 underway. Few schools can boast such idyllic surroundings for cricket, especially in such glorious sunshine. Lucas lost the toss today and Fettes elected to bat first.

The two Fettes openers took no time to get their total up and running. George and Jacob opened the bowling for St. Mary’s and took an over or two to find their line and length. However, they soon did and in the 4th over, Jacob took the first wicket, a great caught and bowled effort. Fettes then established a decent partnership, with their captain doing most of the scoring. It wasn’t until the 14th over that Jacob again took the second wicket, that of their captain, this time to an excellent, low catch by Lucas; 57, for 2. From that moment forward, wickets fell quite quickly. Freddie got two, Jacob took another making his haul three for the afternoon. Sebastian took two as did George who was perhaps the pick of them all, with figures of 2 for 6 from 5 overs. Fielding was quite tight, although another side might have punished us more for missing a couple of run outs and dropping a couple of catches. However, to reduce the Fettes 1st XI to 94 all out was an excellent effort all round.

In reply, the Fettes opener was quick! Lucas and Freddie had the honour of opening the batting for the side and saw off the first few balls well. Unfortunately, Lucas was beaten by an excellent delivery in the first over which reduced us to 2 for 1. Freddie and George then began to settle and both started to play some nice shots. Freddie (6) lost his wicket in the 4th over at which point we were 11 for 2. His dismissal brought Adam (5) to the crease who also began to build a partnership with George but just as he was finding some form, he was bowled. Jacob (3) was also bowled but not without keeping the score board ticking. Meanwhile, at the other end George was keeping the ship afloat by playing some great shots. Even when their opener came back on, George remained unflustered and on his way to his 57 not out, scored as many runs off his bowling as he did from the others. Callum (10 not out) showed the progress he has made by staying at the crease with George and together they saw the team through to a thoroughly deserved 6 wicket victory.

A great win and a brilliant way to kick start the season. Congratulations to George for scoring his 1st 50, the first of many I’m sure, but you always remember your first one!

Merchiston at St. Mary’s next Wednesday, 2.00pm start.
