Brass Workshop

Forms 3, 4  and 5 were treated to a workshop on Brass instruments on Wednesday afternoon.  Mr Stuart Black, local instructor and conductor arranged the session for us and brought along his colleagues Liam Orr, Robert Fraser and Alan Edmond, Youth Development Officer for the Scottish Brass Band Association.

The children were treated to some inspiring performances from the quartet and were taught about breathing and mouth positions which saw them imitating horses on motorbikes!  The sounds and faces were most amusing as you will see from some of the pictures, however, it's all essential in learning to create the right mouth positions. Some were lucky enough to be able to try out one of the brass instruments - even Miss McRae was made to play the trombone for the first time - although in the 'X Factor' style play-off she was voted off first!

Issie French, form 4, has been learning to play the cornet with Stuart Black in the Gala Youth Band - a new venture which started last Autumn.  Issie has made great progress along with the other 15 beginners and was able to treat us to a solo performance on her cornet.

A great fun session for all.  Please do look out for the information leaflet which has been sent home with pupils in forms 3, 4 and 5 - we would love to hear some brass instruments in St Mary's and see some more of our pupils participating in the Youth Band.
