St. Mary's School
Sports at St. Mary's School - a game of cricket in the Summer
Sports

All pupils at St. Mary's follow a sports programme designed to inculcate the values of fair play, honesty, determination and application through a wide variety of pursuits in which participation is the key. Sport is a vital part of school life for children of all ages and is a natural complement to our academic and cultural life.

Rugby and cricket dominate the boys' games timetable, whilst for the girls, netball, hockey and rounders are the major sports. St. Mary's is proud to have produced a number of Scottish international rugby players as well as British Lions over the years including Roger Baird (brother of the current Chairman of Governors) and John Jeffrey. Situated as we are next to the famous Greenyards rugby pitch, home to Melrose RFC (the birthplace of sevens rugby), we hope to produce a few more!

Minor sports enjoyed by St. Mary's pupils include tennis, golf, swimming, athletics and cross-country running.

Our games fields are extensive and include an all-weather play top surface. Competitive fixtures are arranged with other IAPS schools as well as local schools and sports clubs, giving as many children as possible the chance of playing in a representative side at Under 13, Under 11 or Under 9 levels.
