The 3rd’s were full of enthusiasm today as they warmed up for their hotly anticipated game against Dollar. The six players from St Mary’s were versing an opposing squad with three substitutions, but they knew they had the stamina to keep up and so the result would be decided primarily on skill.

From the first hit back, St Mary’s were playing to win. A lot of great communication from the girls, and in particular Amelie in the back line, allowed us to make the most of our opportunities in the field. Hannah’s quick plays from the top of the D allowed us to catch Dollar off guard and give the midfield chance to run the ball up to the attacking goal. Emma was always hovering at the goalmouth during these attacking periods, ready to capitalise on a pass from Lara or Libby or to take on the defence line herself. However, just because a person is there does not mean you always have to pass the ball girls. If there is space to run straight into the D, take the opportunity! Perhaps a quieter attacking game for Libby, but she certainly had a presence in the defence, tightly marking players and competing for the ball whenever possible. It was nil all at halftime but not long into the second half Dollar slipped a ball behind a high St Mary’s defensive line and into the goal. Lara was quick to get the ball up the pitch after this, and taking on the advice given at halftime about running the ball into the D, scored an exciting goal for St Mary’s! Lucy was spectacular in defence and provided great verbal encouragement to the ladies to keep them going after Dollar hit back and scored another goal to take the lead again. Despite time being almost up, the girls in green never gave up; the last play of the game being a shot at goal that narrowly missed and took our chances of an equalizer with it. The final score 2-1 to Dollar.

It was unfortunate to lose but nonetheless, I am so proud of the girls. Their communication, work rate and spirit was spectacular and made for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon
